0183 Toft Cottage

Sensitive, contemporary extension of a picturesque period cottage tucked away in a leafy, Green Belt corner of Cheshire.

The owners approached Bridge Architects to prepare options for retaining the existing house (formerly a series of very small workers cottages) and provide designs for a contemporary extension suitable for modern family living.

Situated in Green Belt, the site presented very specific challenges, based around detailed volume calculations to establish viable solutions.

The preferred design solution retains the existing building untouched, and proposes a new, single storey extension to the rear which reads as a ‘garden wall’, acting as a backdrop against which to read the existing house. The new low white rendered volume encloses a series of cellular and open-plan spaces which reveal key views across the open countryside surrounding the house.
